Light is the raw material of film: the world beam into the camera, is projected onto the silver screen and reflected into the cinema theatre. In doing so the spectrum of the film projection illuminates social structures, bringing that which is hidden to the fore and giving the familiar new light. Because of these properties there have always been attempts to influence the radiance of films from the outside.
The retrospective Mischlicht concerns itself with the effects of external influences on the creative filming processes at the film university. Two programmes present student documentaries, that faced attempts at interference. They were censored or even banned. This look into the past sheds light on the limits of the independence of documentary work.
Wozu denn über DIESE LEUTE einen FILM?

1980, Prenzlauer Berg: Heises friend’s motorbike has been stolen. Instead of going to the police, the director sets out to find the thieves himself and encounters two brothers, who seem to be involved. He accompanies them through the milieu: difficult entry into the job market, a lot of alcohol and the social margins.

An honest portrait of the living conditions of assembly workers who were involved in the northern light gas pipeline. Most of them hoped for good wages. But director Gerd Wille discovered only great resentment over poor supplies and sanitary conditions as well as a lack of leisure activities.

Königsheid children’s home: children and young people tell of life in the home and the dreams and opportunities they hope for in their future outside of the home. The film lets the home’s residents and outsiders have their say and follows the children on their way into their own lives.
